~ A Guide to connect with the Water Element ~
In this blog post I will share with you different practices and tips I have personally found useful to embody the Water Element and the powerful ways we can work with it through my own experiences.
Understanding the Water Element
The water element is often associated with emotions, intuition, and healing. Just like water can flow smoothly or become turbulent, our emotions can range from calm to stormy. It represents the ebb and flow of life, reminding us of the importance of being flexible and adaptable. Water is also a symbol of intuition and the subconscious mind, encouraging us to tap into our inner wisdom and trust our gut feelings.
Our earliest experience is being held by, and floating in water, as we floated in our Mothers' wombs. Despite not having conscious memories of this time, water is the first element we came to know intimately. It cradled us in its gentle embrace, providing a sense of security and comfort. Wherever water flows on this planet, you can be sure to find life. Water is the great shapeshifter, it moves around and through obstacles set in its path with grace and cascades into the unknown with power and tenacity. Water purifies heals and transforms. In nature water flows to low places, gathers its power and nurtures life. As humans we are made up of at least 70% water which is vital to regulate our body temperature, carry nutrients and oxygen to cells, lubricate joints, keep us hydrated and purify our bodies.
2. The Water Element's Influence on the Emotions
By reflecting on the qualities of water – its ability to adapt, flow, and nourish – we can learn to navigate our own emotional landscape with grace and ease. Whether we are seeking to bring more emotional balance into our lives or to tap into our intuitive guidance, the water element serves as a powerful reminder to go with the flow and trust in the wisdom of our emotions.
Visualise water in it’s natural form and you interacting with it in some way. Perhaps diving into the ocean, floating down a river or dancing under a waterfall or the rain.
How does the water element make you feel?
Does the water have a calming, cleansing effect on your system?
Does it provoke feelings of uncomfortable fear?
3. The Water Signs in Astrology
The Water signs in Astrology are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces and are known for being highly sensitive to the emotions of others, having a strong understanding of their intuitive or psychic abilities and deeply in touch with their subconscious. At times they can get overwhelmed in feeling, often getting hit with waves of emotion, getting lost in thought and being extremely protective of the ones they love. Since Water is free flowing and does not take the form of any shape, these signs can be susceptible to getting walked all over, especially if there are no balancing elements like Fire in the natal chart.
4. Signs of Imbalance in the Water Element
When the Water Element is out of balance it can manifest in various ways in our lives. One common sign of imbalance in the water element is feeling overwhelmed with emotions. This could mean experiencing intense mood swings, feeling overly sensitive, or being unable to express your feelings in a healthy way.
5. Practical Ways to Connect with the Water Element
Explore or imagine Water in different forms - rain, waterfall, ocean spray, waves, ice etc and let it guide you into emotional expression, perhaps in a new range of ways. Welcome any emotions that come up in the body and then move them in what ever way intuitively feels right for you.
Allow me to share with you some different ways to bring Water balance into your life:
Spend time in nature near natural bodies of Water: Dive into the ocean, a lake or a pool, float around and let Water hold you like a baby. Shower under a waterfall or walk along the seashore.
Take a long bath.
Collect a jar of Water from its natural source (ocean water, spring water or rain water) and leave it in the sun during the day and the moonlight overnight to charge up and use in your Altar to honour the Water element.
Try a cold shower or wild swim to reduce anxiety, improve circulation, enhance energy, strengthen your immune system, embrace greater emotional and physical resilience, and boost your mood like nothing else.
Feel gratitude for every drink of fresh, clean, revitalising Water you have ever received and bring attention to your beautiful physical body which is made up of 70% Water.
Imagine Water in different forms - rain, waterfall, ocean spray, waves, ice etc and let it guide you into emotional expression perhaps in a new range of ways.
Any emotions that come up in the body, feel them and then move them in what ever way intuitively feels right for you.
6. Lessons I have learned from the Water Element
A big inner change for me since developing my Earth Altar practice has been allowing myself to feel and express my emotions in a healthy way. Spending time alone in a place where I feel comfortable and safe and bringing my attention to how I feel in the moment has allowed me to understand that:
No emotion is bad
Emotions are just energy that needs to be expressed
Big emotions can equal a big opportunity for growth
Feeling and expressing our emotions takes stress off the nervous system
Emotions come and go and there is no need to overly identify with them
The more you allow yourself to feel and express them, the healthier and quicker they flow through and out
Having a good cry helps me feel much lighter
